Joe does dirt

San Diego Padres starter Joe Musgrove continues to put in great work this season, and he’ll look to close his unofficial first half on a high note as he tunes up for the All-Star game against the Colorado Rockies.

Musgrove has been the Padres’ best pitcher this season and one of the best starters in the National League to boot. The right-hander owns a 2.96 expected ERA while limiting opponents to a .232 expected batting average. He has also been one of the most reliable pitchers in baseball, lasting at least six innings in all 15 of his starts.

Wednesday night, Musgrove will stare across at a Rockies team that he has dominated ever since joining the Padres. In fact, he’s allowed just one earned run over 24 1-3 innings in four starts against Colorado dating back to last season. That includes holding them scoreless over six innings on just four hits while striking out eight back on June 10.

And while the Rockies are obviously a better offense at home, they’re still a below-average team when going against right-handers, ranking 16th in batting average, 19th in OPS, and 28th in wRC+.

The Rockies counter Musgrove with Chad Kuhl, who can be described as average at best. The righty owns a 4.28 xERA and is giving up a .270 xBA to opponents. He also doesn’t strike out a ton of guys ranking in the 13th percentile in K-rate.

Mix in that the Padres got to him for five runs on eight hits in that same June 10 meeting and you’ve got to like Musgrove’s chances to notch his ninth win of the season.

Joe Musgrove Prop: To record a win (-110 at DraftKings)

Sho me the money

It’s Sho-time!

Los Angeles Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani makes his final start prior to the All-Star break tonight against the Houston Astros, and it’s crazy to think that following his historic MVP campaign from a season ago, he could claim his first Cy Young Award this year.

The 28-year-old has taken his game on the mound to the next level in 2022. Ohtani is pitching to a 2.62 expected ERA and is limiting opponents to a .217 expected batting average while striking out a ridiculous 12.3 batters per nine innings.

And those strikeouts are coming in bunches recently. Ohtani has notched at least 10 Ks in each of his last three starts, totaling 34 over 20 2-3 innings of work.

Now, the Astros aren’t normally a team you pick on when it comes to opposing strikeout props, but they clearly haven’t figured out the puzzle that is Ohtani. In two starts against the Astros back in April, Ohtani struck out 21 batters over 10 2-3 innings, punching out at least nine in each game.

Bet on Ohtani to keep racking up the Ks in tonight’s matchup.

Shohei Ohtani Prop: Over 7.5 strikeouts (+114 at FanDuel)

Poppin’ Cris

Now, I usually try to keep these plays to three separate games, but there is just one more pick I’ve got to make in this Astros-Angels game. So, are you ready for strikeouts galore? Because we’re also backing Cristian Javier to go Over 7.5 strikeouts in this game as well.

Javier is in the middle of a breakout season for the Astros. The 25-year-old right-hander owns a 2.47 expected ERA, is limiting opponents to a crazy-low .175 expected batting average, and exactly matches Shohei’s 12.3 strikeouts per nine innings.

Javier seems to be a little more inconsistent than Ohtani and is coming off a weird start against the Royals where he was roughed up a bit. But he still managed to rack up seven punchouts in just five innings. To boot, he’s totaled 79 strikeouts in his last 49 1-3 innings. That includes 14 Ks against this same Angels team less than two weeks ago.

And there’s no reason to think he can’t have another high strikeout night. The Angels rank dead last in both strikeouts per game (9.69) and K-rate when facing right-handers.

If you like strikeouts, this game is for you.

Cristian Javier Prop: Over 7.5 strikeouts (+112 at FanDuel)
