Edgeguarding Guide: How to Edgeguard in MultiVerse – MultiVersus Wiki Guide

Edgeguarding is not unique to MultiVersus but is a widely used technique in platform fighters. The main reason why edgeguarding works in platform fighters is because, unlike traditional fighting games, platform fighters are ruled by percentages and stocks. This can result in both players getting creative to eliminate each other’s stocks and win the game as quickly as possible.

Edgeguarding is one of the techniques implemented by players to take their opponent’s stocks quickly. However, it is not without its downsides. So whether you’re for essential tips and tricks for edgeguarding or simply want to learn how to avoid edgeguarding in MultiVerse, our handy guide below has you covered.

What Is Edgeguarding and How To Do It?

Edgeguarding, in theory, sounds easy enough to do; prevent the opponent that is off-stage from coming back to the stage, and that should be it. This is easier to do the higher the percentage of the character being edgeguarded as the moves you perform will do more knockback. However, the hard part about this is actually doing it.

Edgeguarding is not a systematic process, it’s an art. It’s not something that can be replicated over and over unless your opponent does the same thing off-stage. There are a lot of factors that contribute to edgeguarding. Your character, your opponent’s character, the stage, and the percentages. Since there’s no one way to do edgeguarding, you’re going to have to be creative to get your off-stage kills.

General Edgeguarding Tips and Tricks

Here are some tips and tricks for edgeguarding:

  • In MultiVersus, edgeguarding is a relatively safe endeavor unless you make a stupid mistake. Don’t use all your jumps, air dodges, or your specials, and save some for your recovery. You can refresh them by wall clinging if you’re off-stage or by landing on stage.
  • Observe what your opponent does when they’re off-stage, can you take advantage of what they’re doing off-stage to easily take their stock?
  • Sometimes the best thing to do is to just go out there and do it. If you fail, learn from your mistake.
  • Most characters’ down aerial attack is a good tool for edgeguarding.
  • If you have a projectile, you can also use it to edgeguard opponents provided you’re confident in your aim.

Edgeguarding is an abstract concept due to human habits and tendencies and may vary from playstyle to playstyle. Practice makes perfect!

How to Avoid Being Edgeguarded

One of the worst spots to be in MultiVersus is off-stage with another person trying to hit you while you’re out there in an attempt to take your stock. Luckily there are things you can do to prevent that from happening. Here are some of them:

  • Don’t spend all of your resources immediately just trying to recover. You have multiple ways of recovery mixups by using jump, air dodge, and specials. If you waste all of them and you get hit, you’ll have your stock taken from you.
  • Wallclinging is a viable strategy to mix up your recovery. However, be aware that players might just drop off and spike you with their down aerial attack or another move which can end up with you having your stock taken earlier.
  • If you’re feeling risky, look for a reversal if the opponent edgeguarding you is also off-stage. Instead of your stock being taken, it’s gonna be theirs and it might just turn the tides of the match.

Practical Application

In this situation, we can see Shaggy off-stage with both Finn and Wonder Woman ready to prevent him from touching the stage again. Wonder Woman’s best bet to end Shaggy’s stock here is a down aerial attack to finish the edgeguard while Finn’s decides to stay on stage as another wall to prevent Shaggy’s recovery in case Wonder Woman failed to take Shaggy’s stock with her spike.

The opposing Wonder Woman (highlighted in red) just respawned and the best thing she could do is to run over to her teammate and knock Finn off-stage as quick as possible and hope that Shaggy could recover. Shaggy was spiked but he lived and the opposing Wonder Woman was able to knock both Finn and his allied Wonder Woman off-stage and was able to interrupt the edgeguard sequence.
